PREP RANKINGS: Shield win propels Weber football to No. 1 spot

NOTE: Rankings reflect games played through Sunday, Aug. 27. Only teams from the Standard-Examiner’s area of coverage are considered in weekly prep rankings.


1. Weber (1-1, 0-0 Region 1) – Weber overcame a difficult start to score 31 straight and beat Roy 38-28 last Friday.

2. Roy (1-1, 0-0 Region 5) – Roy fell apart against Weber because of an inability to stop the run. Weber totaled 354 rushing yards and 6.9 yards per carry.

3. Syracuse (1-1, 0-0 Region 1) – Ty Burke picked off a fake field goal attempt and ran it back 80 yards for a touchdown to give Syracuse a 24-21 win over Jordan last Thursday.

4. Fremont (1-1, 0-0 Region 1) – Cade Hadley blocked an extra point in overtime to seal Fremont’s first win of the season last Friday, a 28-27 triumph over Pleasant Grove.

5. Bear River (2-0, 0-0 Region 12) – Bear River’s defense mastered Box Elder last Friday as the Bears won 19-0. The Bees scored 39 points the week before against Layton.


1. Syracuse (6-0, 2-0 Region 1) – Syracuse beat Northridge (2-0) and Clearfield (9-1) last week. The Titans have a scoring differential of 35-3 so far.

2. Fremont (3-1-2, 2-0 Region 1) – Fremont scored nearly as many goals against Davis (5) last Thursday as it did in its first five matches (6). Fremont scored in the final 30 seconds of the second half to defeat Weber and then rallied from a three-goal second-half deficit to defeat Davis 5-4 in extra time last week.

3. Viewmont (4-1-2, 0-0 Region 5) – Viewmont cruised to a 3-1 victory at Layton last week.

4. Northridge (4-2, 1-1 Region 1) – Northridge lost to Syracuse but then defeated Weber last week.

5. Box Elder (3-1-2, 0-0 Region 5) – Box Elder earned a draw with Sky View and defeated Mountain Crest last week.


1. Morgan (1-0, 0-0 Region 13) – Morgan opened its season last Wednesday with a sweep of Sky View.

2. Bountiful (1-0, 0-0 Region 5) – Bountiful opened its season last Wednesday with a sweep of Davis.

3. Fremont (3-0, 0-0 Region 1) – Fremont opened its season Saturday with wins in all of its matches at the Weber Tournament. The Silver Wolves swept every match.

4. Syracuse (9-0, 0-0 Region 1) – Syracuse opened its season on Aug. 18-19 with wins in all nine of its matches at the Tournament of Champions at Skyline High School. Host Skyline was the only team to take a set from Syracuse during the tournament.

5. Box Elder (11-0, 0-0 Region 5) – Box Elder went a perfect 9-0 at the High Flying Falcons Open Volleyball Tournament last Friday and Saturday. The Bees – who opened their season with wins over Brighton and Green Canyon – swept all of their opponents at the tournament, including host Clearfield.
