The Lady Trailblazers managed only three hits but came away with a 2-0 victory over the Lady Hilltoppers.
Megan Ackerman pitched the complete-game shutout as Boone picked up a crucial Big 7 Conference victory late in the season to remain tied with David Crockett in the league standings.
“When you get two good pitchers like that going against each other, you get quick games,” Science Hill assistant coach Bob Dempsey said. “That was a great high school game.”
In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady ’Toppers (21-8) got a hit from Jannon Glaspie to lead off the inning and bring the tying run to the plate in Abbie Jones.
Jones hit a line shot to Boone first baseman Greyson Stevens, who stepped on first base while Glaspie was off to get the double play.
“Greyson made a great play there. They had 8-9-1 coming up and we were trying to pitch around their leadoff hitter (Kasey Bennett) all day,” Boone head coach Jeremy Jenkins said. “She’s one of the best hitters in the conference.”
Bennett was the last hope for Science Hill and she grounded out to end the game.
BIG 1-2 PUNCH
The game marks back-to-back shutout nights for Boone (21-9) after Nickolette Ferguson hurled a 7-0 victory over Dobyns-Bennett on Tuesday night.
“Having a good 1-2 is big down here near the end of the season,” Jenkins said. “It’s getting crunch time right now, and with those two and Savannah Russell coming back soon, I like our chances.”
Ackerman got into two jams in the game, one in the first inning with the bases loaded and once in the fourth with runners on first and second with one out. She got out of both without any damage. She struck out four and walked two.
Science Hill freshman Sejal Neas pitched the complete-game loss, but was smooth after a rocky first inning. She put up six consecutive scoreless innings and allowed only two more Boone hits. She struck out three and walked two.
“I have no complaints whatsoever,” Dempsey said of Neas’ performance. “We had been hitting it well, but the Boone pitcher quieted our bats. You have to tip your hat to her. The one in the circle controls the game.”
A LOOK AT THE BOX
Ferguson was 1-for-3 with the only RBI of the game to lead Boone. Ashley Starnes went 1-for-2 and scored a run for the Lady Trailblazers.
Bennett and Gia Hickman had the only hits of the day for Science Hill.
Science Hill will travel to conference co-leader David Crockett on Thursday. Boone will also hit the road and head to Volunteer.
